The Grace Hopper Program at Fullstack Academy is an immersive software engineering course for women+ students (this includes trans and nonbinary folx) with no up-front tuition cost.

You only pay tuition once you secure a job after graduating.

Their mission is to empower women+ in technology through affordable education, quality instruction, and individualized mentorship. They provide a world-class educational environment with an advanced curriculum developed and taught by experienced instructors. They will also connect you with a support network of alums and mentors in the tech community.

The Grace Hopper Program is a 17-week immersive course. The experience starts with a 4-week, part-time portion, Foundations, which is completed remotely before coming to campus. That’s followed by the full-time, 13-week immersive, held on-campus in New York City. While on campus, students learn through a mix of lectures, hands-on workshops, projects, pair-programming, and more.

Admiral Hopper once said, “A ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. Sail out to sea and do new things.” Now there’s nothing between you and an exciting career in technology.

Full Stack JavaScript Development

  • Computer Science
Before mastering the higher-level technologies in software development for the web, it is vital to understand the underpinnings of lower-level theory. This is why your journey at Grace Hopper will start with a deep dive into the fundamentals of Computer Science. Once you solidify these areas, you’ll be ready to start focusing on front-end vs. back-end development, systems, frameworks and ultimately full-stack applications.
    • Algorithms
    • Data Structures
    • Object Oriented Programming
  • Front-end Development
JavaScript is redefining what it means to be a modern web application. We’ll study design patterns of “Single Page Web Applications” using React. You will know how JavaScript frameworks are used to build advanced web client applications like Gmail, Facebook and Google Maps.
    • React & JavaScript MVC
    • HTML & CSS
    • JavaScript frameworks
  • Back-end Development
JavaScript is an incredibly flexible and popular language, quickly becoming the “lingua franca” of the web. Node.js, a platform built on Chrome’s JavaScript runtime, allows JavaScript to run server-side. This makes JavaScript the only programming language that runs in the front-end and back-end.

    • Services & APIs
    • System architecture
  • Databases
Study how Grace Hopper Academy efficiently and scalably stores data in their web apps. From SQL to newer trends like NoSQL, MongoDB and client-side storage, master how data can be made, validated, synced and stored. We’ll also build our own lightweight database to learn how the internals work.
    • SQL
    • MongoDB
    • ORM Tools
  • Tools & Best Practices
Learn the tools of the developer trade, from version control systems to text editors and the command line. The curriculum also covers test driven development and design patterns, giving students the opportunity to write optimized, scalable code.
    • Git version control
    • Shell & systems
    • Test-driven development
  • Masters Series
Grace Hopper Academy knows that your learning journey doesn’t end on the last day at Grace Hopper. That’s why we’ve created the Masters Series, a collection of workshops and lectures designed to deepen your understanding of key computer science concepts and industry best practices, giving you the tools and confidence you need to keep moving forward in your new career.

Admissions Criteria

The software engineering course at The Grace Hopper Program is a challenging and rewarding educational experience.

Grace Hopper’s curriculum covers a lot of ground — from computer science fundamentals to front and back-end software development. They have created an excellent environment for motivated, passionate students to learn, but the program does not start at a beginner level, so some coding experience is required prior to attendance

The Program’s admissions criteria are centered around one goal: Ensuring you are prepared to succeed in the educational environment at Grace Hopper and as a software engineer after graduation.

Candidates are evaluated on a variety of criteria, including programming skill, educational/professional background, and culture fit. The weightings for these areas are not set in stone, particularly if you have a strong academic track record. They encourage all aspiring programmers to consider applying for our program; you might just find you have a natural knack and love for coding.

  • Programming Fundamentals – The Grace Hopper Program’s curriculum does not start at a pure beginner level. Students should already be familiar with the building blocks of coding (loops, conditionals, arrays, objects, functions) and be able to apply that knowledge to solve problems.
  • Motivated Learners – The educational structure at Grace Hopper is hands-on and fast paced. They look for students who can work hard to solve challenging problems, and who don’t give up when faced with a question they can’t immediately answer.
  • Team Players – Collaboration is a huge part of being a developer. From pair programming to working in a group of people, being a team player is vital for success at Grace Hopper and afterwards. They’re looking for students who work well with others and will contribute to the overall environment at the school.

Income Share Agreement

  • ISA payments adjust according to levels of income
  • Monthly payments are calculated by applying the student’s income share rate to their total monthly earned income
  • ISA obligations can be ended earlier by making early payments as listed in an early payment schedule

Check ISA availability at this or another school.

Income Share Agreements may be issued by Blue Ridge Bank, N.A.

Private Loan

Finance your education with monthly installments. Monthly payment throughout the program: $337/mo.**

** APR depend on credit and program. Complete admissions application first and, if accepted, additional loan information will be provided to you.

Scholarships are available for women, military vets, and other communities.

ISAs may be issued by Blue Ridge Bank, N.A.

What Income Share Agreements Are & How They Compare to Loans

WHAT IS AN ISA?

ISAs are a flexible alternative to loans. Basically, students pay a percentage of their future income for a set period of time, up to a maximum cap, without accruing interest.

HOW PAYMENT WORKS

  • Students do not pay until they find a job and reach the minimum income threshold
  • The payments adjust according to levels of the student’s income
  • Monthly payments are calculated by applying the income share rate to the total monthly earned income
  • ISA obligations can be ended earlier by making early payments as listed in the early payment schedule

ISA vs. STUDENT LOAN COMPARISON

Income Share Agreements     VS.       PLUS/Private Loans
Interest does not accrue or capitalize. Interest accrues and capitalizes.
Your credit score does not affect the terms of your ISA. Your credit score may affect the terms of your loan and could impact your eligibility.
Monthly payments are based on a percentage of your income. You pay a fixed amount each month, regardless of your income.
Payments don’t start until you make above the minimum salary level in your ISA contract. You make payments, even if you are not making an income.
You only make ISA payments within a specific timeframe, usually 5-7 years. After that your obligation is over. Loan payment term can extend indefinitely until you pay off the principal and interest.
You know the maximum amount you’ll pay, no matter what. Interest is capitalized, so the final payoff amount can increase over the life of the loan if you do not make minimum monthly payments.
